A Journey To The Promised Land: Family Home Evening
Lesson: Start by reading The Journey to the Promised Land. Talk briefly about the gift of the Holy Ghost. The Holy Ghost can guide you in your life like the Liahona did for Lehi's Family.
Scripture: 2 Nephi 2:20-21 "My God hath been my support; he hath led me through mine afflictions in the wilderness; and he hath preserved me upon the waters of the great deep. He hath filled me with his love."
Moroni 10:5 "By the power of the Holy Ghost you may know the truth of all things."
Song: The Holy Ghost (Pg. 105, Children's Songbook)
Discussion Questions:
Have you ever been scared and needed help from Heavenly Father to know what to do?
What did the Liahona do for Lehi's family?
How did the Liahona work?
How can the Holy Ghost work for us like the Liahona worked for Lehi's family?
What happen when we don't listen-like when Nephi's brothers didn't listen?
What are some things that help us feel the Holy Ghost?

Activity:
The Telephone Game
The first person starts with a simple phrase and whispers it to the person sitting next to them. That person listens very hard and then whispers it to the person next to them and so on until you get to the last person. The last person repeats the phrase out loud. If it's the same phrase as the first person, you win! This game can be a little tricky, as you have to listen carefully to what the person next to you is saying. Just like the Holy Ghost who whispers quietly to us and we have to listen to be able to hear it and choose the right.
Examples of phrases you could use:
"The Holy Ghost will help you"
"Jesus Loves You"
"I can feel peace when I listen to the spirit"
"Choose to be kind today"
"Choose the right"
"The Holy Ghost is my guide"
Treat:
Hot Chocolate
Just like hot chocolate makes us feel warm when we drink it, so does the Holy Ghost when we listen.
And for all you overachievers out there....
Compass Cookies
Make Sugar cookies and decorate with frosting by drawing an arrow on the cookie like a compass or the Liahona.
Sugar Cookie Recipe
cream together:
2 cups sugar
1 cup butter (soft)
2 eggs
2 tsp. vanilla
now add:
1 cup sour cream and mix
then add:
6 cups flour
2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp salt
Mix well. Cover and chill 1 hour (no - you can't skip this part :))
Preheat oven to 350. Sprinkle flour on your countertop and start with half the dough. Roll out dough to about an 1/8"-1/4" and cut into circles for compass shapes. Spray or grease a cookie sheet and place cookies on the sheet. Bake for about 10 min. Cookies are done when lightly brown on the bottom.
Frosting
4 cups powdered sugar
2/3 cup butter (soft)
6 oz cream cheese (soft)
1 tsp vanilla
Purchase a tube of black frosting to draw your compass on your cookies once frosted.
